| Lenape means “original people.” The Lenape were peaceful
and happy people. They lived in New Jersey. A typical Lenape
village needs to have a dog. Dogs were important for hunting.
They would sniff out small game. The Lenape would also hunt turtle,
frogs, birds, deer, bear, and turkey. The Lenape were gatherers and
hunters. They grew the three sister crops which were corn, beans,
and squash. Fish was also an important food. They always had
food on the fire. They lived in little houses called wigwams which
could hold four -five people. When the families got too big they
would move into longhouses which could hold 20-30 people. They lived
next to rivers because of food and transportation. They rode in dugout
canoes on the rivers.

the river. They used it for fishing and bathing . They had rich soil
to grow their “three sisters crops” known as corn, beans, and squash.
The Lenape Indians were friendly Indians. They always had a pot of
food cooking for visitors. The Lenape cut trees to make dugout canoes.
When they killed a deer or any animal they used all the parts of
the animal and made clothes (out of the skin), the bones (for tools), and
the meat (to eat). Arrowheads were made for hunting and for
weapons. Most families usually had a dog. The Lenape
Indians kept their villages neat and well organized.

| The Lenape Indians lived in the Great Meadows area thousands
of years ago. They lived by rivers because they got fish and water
from it. Lenape Indians always welcomed visitors. We put a
dugout canoe in our Lenape village because that is how they traveled.
The Lenape Indians had crops so they wouldn’t starve in the winter. They
planted corn, beans, and squash. These were known as the three sister
crops.

and were shaped rectangular or oval. The houses were called wigwams
and longhouses. Some other things that they needed from the
wilderness were trees to make canoes, animals for their meat, bones
for tools such as spears,arrow heads, and bows and arrows. The men
did the hunting and fishing. Most of the time they ate what they
farmed. The women were responsible for the farming which consisted
mostly of corn, squash, and beans, known as the three sister crops, and
sweet potatoes.

it was used to bathe in, to drink, and boil food. Lenape Indian homes were
made out of saplings, tree bark, reeds, and grass mats. Wigwams were small
and round and longhouses were long and were much bigger than wigwams. Wigwams
would fit one family and longhouses would fit four families. We really

bark and the wigwam was made out of deerskin. The Lenape had crops

fit 25 people. A wigwam could fit 5 people. This was another type
of Lenape home. They had a garden with corn, beans,and squash.They
had dogs and their villages were next to a river. They used the river
to bathe in and for transportation with their dugout canoes.
They had no fences and they made their clothes out of the skin of animals that they hunted. They also hunted for their food.They always had a deer skins hanging to dry.

were no walls around the village. There was a fire in the center
of the village to show hospitality to everyone. The types of houses
that they lived in were longhouses and wigwams. They were made out
of saplings, twigs, grass mats, tree bark, and logs. They hunted
with spears and fished with nets. They lived by water because they
needed the water to cook, clean, bathe, fish, and drink. They domesticated
dogs for fun and friendship. We will always remember them as kind
hearted people and the first humans the U.S.A.

| Our villages were supposed to look like a typical Lenape Indian
village. There was always at least one longhouse and a couple
of wigwams. One family lived in a wigwam.. Two or three families
lived in a longhouse. The lenape always lived near a river. The water
helped the Lenape transport, drink, cook, and water their crops.
In their village, the Lenape always had a dog. The dog was the village’s
pet.

Lenape Indians always have food cooking . They were very friendly. They
would welcome everyone . They would give their food to a stranger
if needed . They lived by a river. The river was needed for food
and it was used as their highway.

Dogs were there so that the village could have a pet.

| A Lenape Indian Village usually consisted of a river because
water was a resource to the Lenape. They used it for many things. In a
Lenape village there was also the 3 sister crops, which are corn, beans,
and squash. The name Lenape means common or ordinary people, but to us
they’re a whole lot more!

showed they were friendly Indians and that they would let other visitors
in their village. This is what we found out about a typical Lenape
village through our research.
