School

probably aware our school district had a relatively large voter turnout for
this year’s school election. In our
district 28.5% of the registered voters showed up which is more than double
the typical voter turnout for school elections and probably the highest
percentage in our county. The results
were as follows: Tax Levy - General Funds:

Yes 667 No Independence Seats:
Joe Mahal 613 Robert
Jones 600 Victoria

taking the time to understand the issues and for casting a vote in this
year’s election. Future financial and
program updates will be provided to keep you informed of issues that are
important to our school district and the education of the students. If you would be interested in e-mail
updates and are not already receiving these updates, please provide us with
your e-mail address and we will add you to our list/serve mailing. You may send it via e-mail to
jalercia@gmrsd.com.
Thank You, Students! Thank you to all of our very
responsible students for coming out to place their votes on April 19th!
The students were asked to vote on
their choice of a theme day for May 19th. The ballots have been tallied, and Beach
Day won!
Once again, the Hackettstown Foundation
for Educational Excellence will be holding its Annual Duck Race on Saturday,
April 30th, at 11 a.m. at Alumni Field on Willow Grove Street. The race is
the grand finale to the “nature-fest” events that begin at 8:30 a.m. for
children K-5. All funds raised will
be used by the Foundation to support the teachers and students in the
Hackettstown School District. Great Meadows Regional Students benefit from
programs implemented in the high school.
In the past, the Foundation has supported high school programs in the
technology department with the purchase of “dancing lego robot” kits, a
digital CD recorder for the audio-visual department, and a computer software
program offering web page design, each purchase totaling $1,000, to name a
few. Each purchase of a $5 duck race
raffle ticket enters you into the race with your specially assigned rubber
duck. Tickets will be available for
purchase at all Great Meadows Schools front offices, and, up until the race,
at the following local businesses: Harper’s Bakery, Manhire Opticians, Jack
Scissor Wiz, and Jon-Etta’s Gift Baskets.
(Look for the yellow “Duck Race Ticket” sign in the window.) The first place duck to cross the finish
line wins an $850 Dell Laptop Computer.
The 2nd place prize is “eat out for a year” - twelve $50
gift certificates to area restaurants like Mattar’s, Pietro’s, Charlie
Brown’s, The Pump House, and The Towne Crier, just to name a few. The other valuable prizes include
professional theater tickets, a $200 gift certificate to Shop Rite, an Ann
Reeves print, golf passes for four to Minebrook & Bearbrook golf courses,
AAA membership and free service at Knight’s Automotive, his & her
sunglasses at Manhire’s, and the last duck over the finish line wins a year
gym membership at Chiropractic Wellness and Rehabilitation. (Winners do not need to be present to
win.) Also, watch for the
Foundation’s “Duck”. He will be
spotted at local businesses in town, and prizes will go to those who spot him
and report it on WRNJ the next morning, starting April 18. To purchase or sell tickets, call Helene
at 637-8769. PTO News The last

Bowling Unit In
Liberty Township, we have been known to overhear 4th and 5th
grade students talking about how they almost made a “turkey”, or how
they helped another classmate to stop “lofting” the ball. Talking about picking up a “spare”
had nothing to do with change in their pockets. At Liberty School the fourth and fifth
grade students participated in a bowling unit of study in physical education
class. To support our school’s
environment, due to modifications made to the sport, on March 23rd
our 4th and 5th grade classes visited Oakwood Lanes for a bowling field trip.
The students experienced the sport of bowling in its true form: the heavy balls, the longer alleys, the
foul lines, and of course we did not use “bumpers”. I would
like to thank the management and staff at Oakwood Lanes for making our trip a
true success! They were so helpful in
reviewing the rules and bowling etiquette with our students and reinforcing
the four-step approach. The bowling
“pros” assisted the students and gave them individual bowling tips to help
them become better bowlers. All of
the children were treated to a “behind the scenes” tour to see the mechanics
of the pin setting machines. This was
a highlight for many students! When our
two hours at the lanes ended, and all the bowling balls were back on the
racks and bowling shoes handed back, every student left with a farewell gift of
free bowling passes. What a
surprise! The students really enjoyed
this trip. Their excitement and
delight was apparent. The fourth
grade students asked if they could return to Oakwood Lanes next year. I wish to
express my great appreciation to the management and staff of Oakwood
Lanes. They provided us with an
educational experience that was efficient and extremely fun. Their generosity and caring attitudes made
our trip a huge success. I would also
like to thank the management of Oakwood Lanes for donating the free bowling
passes, a ten-dollar gift certificate, and a “Cartoon Network” bowling ball
as prizes for our “Bowling Trivia” bulletin board contest, which motivated
the students and made a true impact on their learning. The management and staff at Oakwood Lanes
truly cared about every one of our students!
I look forward to returning to Oakwood Lanes next year with all of our
children. Lisa A. Baatz, Physical Education Teacher Liberty Township Residents 2005 Spring Clean-Up SATURDAY,
