Rider in the Dark: an Epic Horse Story

By Victoria Holmes

The main character in this book should have been a spy!  She is quite aware of her surroundings and the mysteries going on around her environment.  Compelled to find out the solutions to the mysteries, she is always getting in trouble.  At first, I was concerned about her breaking the rules at every turn of the page.  But then I realized what was going on historically and I knew it was necessary for rules to be broken to change inequitable laws.  The reader soon discovers how her family smuggles products to avoid paying the exorbitant taxes.  You are in constant conflict as the reader because everyone seems to be doing something illegal.  This is a very exciting, staying on the edge of your seat type of book with a very satisfying conclusion.
