Stargirl
This summer, like every summer, I headed out West for some
rest and relaxation among the Red Rocks in Arizona. I tend to bring too many
books with me on vacation, I have trouble making up my mind about what to read
while in the airplane, sitting by the pool, or taking a break high up on the
rocks during an all day hike. Luckily, I brought Stargirl with me!
I arrived to Sedona after a two-hour drive from the Phoenix
Airport and went for an early evening hike. When I returned, I sat at the pool
with Jerry Spinelli's book. Within the first few pages I learned the book is
set in Arizona. In fact, Red Rock High School, one of the schools in which
Stargirl competed in the public speaking contest, is a stone’s throw away from
where I was sitting. I have been to visit the school twice!
The book says so much about believing in you and accepting people
for who they are. I wish every student would read this book to be reminded we
are all special human beings having so much to offer the world. We can be
anything we want to be. Stargirl shows us what it really means to give to
others. Even though other kids did not
accept her she still treated everyone with kindness, no matter how mean they
were to her. What we give to the world is what we receive in return.
Read the book! It makes you feel good inside.....I give it 5 stars
and Mrs. O'Connor is going to have a difficult time getting it back from me.
