Tangerine

By Edward Bloor

This is a great book for boys. It is a story of acceptance, truth, and standing up for oneself. Paul Fisher is afraid of his older brother, Erik, a football star. Now that they are living in a wealthy area of Tangerine, Florida, the memories from his younger years in Texas come more often. He knows something happened back there, but can’t quite recall what it is.  Paul has a sight problem, which leads to him getting an individual educational plan (IEP) in school.  He loves to play soccer and is a great goalie. However, when Paul’s coach learns of the IEP, he kicks him off the soccer team blaming it on school rules. Paul is heartbroken, and doesn’t seem to get much support from is parents. He gets transferred to another local school and there deals with other problems such as gangs and not so rich kids. It is in this climate that Paul finally learns the truth of his past and begins to stand up for himself.
