Koop's KornerMrs. Koop, Principal

Ext.  201

Springtime is coming and so is the time for the New Jersey statewide assessments at the elementary and middle school levels.

§         The students in grades three and four will be taking the New Jersey Assessment of Skills and Knowledge (ASK3 and ASK4) standardized tests during the week of March 20, 2006.

§         New and beginning in Spring of 2006, students in grades 5, 6, and 7 are required to take a standardized state test. The test the state has selected is the Riverside Publishing Company’s New Jersey Proficiency Assessments of State Standards. (NJ PASS) The students will take the NJ PASS during the week of April 4, 2006.

§         Students in grade eight are required to take the Grade Eight Proficiency Assessment. (GEPA) The dates for the GEPA testing occur during the week of March 13, 2006.

There is a make-up period following every week of testing. However, it is strongly recommended that your child do his or her very best to complete the required test during the designated week.

What can students and parents do to prepare for statewide assessments or any other kind of tests? There are simple but important ways to prepare.

1.        Talk in a calm and relaxed way about testing to reduce any fears and anxieties. It is important to discuss the importance of doing their very best without creating extra concern or anxiety for your child.

2.        Make sure your child gets a good night’s sleep, eats a healthy breakfast, and arrives to school on time.

3.        Reinforcing the need to pay careful attention to directions and ask the teacher if there is a question.

4.        Maintain regular attendance during the testing period to minimize make-up testing.

If followed, these helpful suggestions will certainly help your child before and during a state test and for any other kind of testing as well.
