| Welcome
to an adventure you are sure to enjoy!

Dean
Tshudy (
Great
Meadows
Middle School
) and Barbara Rheault (
Mullica
Township
Middle School
) will travel to
Oxford
,
England
as members of Team III on the Earthwatch Institute Mission
“Mammals of Wytham Woods”. From
May 19 – May 24 the pair will join four other “citizen
scientists” and participate in small mammal surveys, monitor field
transects, set and check “humane” traps, conduct night surveys
of small mammals (spotlight), and even become bat detectors (Leapin’
lizards Batman!). Information gathered by the team will be posted to
data accounts and used to continue to monitor and conserve native
animal and plant species in Wytham Woods. |
Sponsored by
the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation and National Geographic, Tshudy
and Rheault will teach “Live-From-the-Field”.
Employing technology, the pair will remain in contact with
their students at Great Meadows and
Mullica
Township
by posting on-line journals, answering questions via a weblog,
transmitting live video and voice messages, and speaking directly to
students from the field using satellite phone.
- Tshudy
will emphasize the utilization of tools, processes, and the scientific method in
field research, and he will relate his experiences directly back
to his students through the use of monitored weblogs.
- Rheault
will focus on monitoring and observation techniques, and the use
of data collected in determining biological diversity, impacts
on native populations and species, habitat degradation, and
conservation methods. She’ll relate what she’s learned by
comparing the small mammals of Wytham Woods to those found in
the Pine Barrens of New Jersey.
Check
back frequently to see the progress the team makes, to read the
journal entries, and visit the weblog to view questions from our
students and read the responses of Tshudy and Rheault.
