to the support and generosity of parents, community members and local
businesses, The Board of Trustees of the Great Meadows Regional Education
Foundation have awarded their first round of grants to teachers in the
district, totaling $2,400. Since August of 2003, the trustees of the
education foundation have met monthly to set the groundwork for the
organization and plan programs to provide opportunities for contributions to
be made to the foundation for the benefit of the students. Setting the groundwork required the
assistance of an accountant. Mr. Joe
Calderone, of Calderone and Associates, volunteered his services to take on
this time-consuming and very important first step. What followed was months of planning different events and
programs designed to raise the funds that would be distributed to the
teachers. One fundraising program
that has been put into effect twice and is currently running, is the Teacher
Tribute Program. Parents were invited
to show their appreciation to any teacher, administrator or staff member who
they feel has had a positive affect on the educational life of their child by
making a contribution to the foundation.
Parents responded and contributed generously. Bank
of America, newly established in Hackettstown, sent their branch manager,
Christina Elrod, to present the foundation with a $1,000 contribution. Chill Out, the new ice skating rink
on Stiger Street in Hackettstown, has generously shared profits from “skate
nights” that invited all students in the district to attend. |

Education
Foundation Awards (Cont’d.) When
sufficient funds were collected, the education foundation invited the
teachers to submit grant applications.
Of the thirteen programs submitted, four were chosen for funding. The qualities that the four chosen grants
shared were that they were linked to the curriculum, they were new and
creative, and they had an ability to benefit a large number of students over
a long period of time. The new
programs will add a Book Reading Club as an optional lunch-time activity for
seventh graders, add pedometers to the equipment offered by the Physical
Education department to enhance the Walk Across America Program, add a
teleprompter to the Performing Arts and Audio Visual Departments to enhance
students’ presentation skills, and supply the After School Program with some
basic equipment to initiate their activities. If you would like to contribute to the education foundation during
this holiday season, you can pick up a teacher tribute flyer at the main
office of any school. Your
contribution will also allow you to honor your child’s teacher, thereby
offering the contributor a two-fold opportunity of giving. You can contact the Great Meadows Regional
Education Foundation by calling Ellen Weisentein at 637-4820. Governor
McGreevey’s Book Club The Governor’s selections are: Kindergarten: Five Little Penguins Slipping on the
