Challenged to Jump!

Ms. Baatz has challenged all students in the third, fourth and fifth grades to jump rope.  Students have until February 10, 2006 to try to continuously jump rope (one minute for third grade, one minute and fifteen seconds for fourth grade, and one and a half minutes for fifth grade) without stopping or missing.  If they do so, they will win a certificate and a prize.

Students will be timed during P.E. classes. If a student attempts the challenge and is not successful, they may try it again in their next P.E. class.

The objective of this challenge is to motivate the students to increase their cardio-respiratory endurance, muscle endurance, agility, and coordination.

Students who wish to borrow a jump rope to take home and practice with may pick one up in the main office. The students may return the ropes at the end of their PE jump rope unit.

Good luck to all and start JUMPING!

No Procrastination for Michelle

Great Meadows spellers again proved that they can perform orthographic feats with the best of them.  On January 20, the annual district bee was a suspenseful event worthy of the movie “Spellbound.”

In the final round, contestants carefully considered their responses by asking for definitions, sentences and even languages of origin before attempting to spell their words.  After about 10 minutes of back-and-forth battling, the words “climatologist” and “procrastinate” emerged as the strengths of eighth-grader Michelle P.  Kimberly S, a fifth-grader from Liberty School, was the runner-up in the close contest.

Michelle earned the right to represent our district at the regional spelling bee at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, PA, on March 16.  She will compete against more than 70 spellers from Pennsylvania and New Jersey.  G-o-o-d l-u-c-k, Michelle!

The following students represented their homerooms and language arts classes in the district.  Because of that, you can all consider yourselves w-i-n-n-e-r-s:

        Fifth grade: Anthony C, Holden H, Caly M, Janelle M, Kimberly S.

           Sixth grade: Michael B, Chris B, Maredith C, Tate J, Aris P, Elena R.

          Seventh grade: Robert G, Madison K, Billy K, Chris P, Darrin P, Brian W.

         Eighth grade: Andrew B, Michelle P, Maripily R, Jonathan R, Zach R, Julian T.

Art News

Congratulations to Juliana H, Olivia M, Timothy M, Hannah C, Andrew P, and Elizabeth P for solving the “Mystery Artist Contest.”  Jacob Lawrence, the famous 20th century American painter, was January’s mystery artist.

Here are the clues for February’s contest:

  • This month’s artist was born in New York City in 1894.
  • He created many illustrations for books, advertisements, and magazine covers.
  • He did more than 300 covers for the “Saturday Evening Post” representing familiar everyday scenes from American life.
  • He died in 1978.
  • His initials are N.R.

Good luck and please turn all guesses in to the art room by February 21st.
