ENCYCLOPEDIA FORMAT - Works Cited

You will find most of the information to be cited on the title page and copyright (verso) page of the book.

The punctuation marks and certain words are typed in red in the samples below.  Do not use red when typing your Works Cited.  Red has been used to emphasize the importance of the punctuation marks and words to be included when typing your Works Cited.

 

ENCYCLOPEDIA ARTICLE (NO AUTHOR)

"Title of Article." Title of Encyclopedia. Year.

EXAMPLE:

"New Jersey." Funk and Wagnalls Encyclopedia1993.

 

ENCYCLOPEDIA ARTICLE (ONE AUTHOR)

Author's Last Name, First Name. " Title of Article."  Title of Encyclopedia. Year.

EXAMPLE:

Johnson, Vera. "The Garden State." The New Book of Knowledge. 1995.

 

ENCYCLOPEDIA ARTICLE (MORE THAN ONE AUTHOR)

Author's Last Name, First Name, and Second Author's  First Name Last Name. "Title of

     Article. " Title of Encyclopedia. Date.

EXAMPLE:

Clemens, Paul G.E. and Andrew P. Hordon. "New Jersey." The World Book Encyclopedia. 2003.

 

 

CD-ROM ENCYCLOPEDIA ARTICLE 

Author's Last Name, First Name. "Title of Article." Title of Encyclopedia CD-ROM, Version.

     Place of Publication: Publisher, Year.

EXAMPLE:

Collins, Amy. "New Jersey." Compton's Encyclopedia 2000 Deluxe. CD-ROM, Windows. New

      York: Multimedia, 1999.

The formats used above are based on the guidelines described in the MLA Handbook.  They may have been modified to meet the needs of the students at Great Meadows Middle School.  The students in grades six through eight will be expected to use these formats when creating a Works Cited page.
