Family Guide to Keeping Youth Mentally Healthy and Drug Free

Intro

This site was made by Brian D., Jonathan R., and Matt C. It was made to teach you how to avoid unhealthy situations involving alcohol and how to use resistance skills.

Information

There are many ways to keep your friends without losing them. One of these is to just say no to alcohol. Another could be to just leave the situation. Ignoring the person offering alcohol may also help. If these ideas don’t work try making an excuse to make the person leave you alone. Changing the subject may help get the topic of alcohol off the other person’s mind. Making a joke might help by doing exactly the same thing as changing the subject. Also try to act shocked when the person uses peer pressure on you. Using flattery may help in a situation involving alcohol. Switch to something better like going to the movies or something. Try to return the challenge because they are trying to make you do something they have never done before.

While saying “no” remember why it is bad. Remember it is not safe or healthful to anyone. Also it is illegal to drink at your age. Not only that but drinking shows a lack of self-respect. Choosing to drink might also go against your parent’s rules.

There are many ways that you and others could avoid alcohol. One way is to avoid being in places with friends where alcohol is used. Communicating your thoughts with parents help to encourage family support. Also getting involved in healthful activities in school and at home help a lot.

When you are saying “no” you are doing many things for yourself. You are saying, “yes” to good health, keeping your thinking clear, being able to avoid accidents, and following the law because of your age.

All in all everyone at a young age should remember to avoid alcohol and remember the consequences of saying, “yes” and benefits of saying, “no”.
