Great Meadows Regional Middle School
Physical Education
Policy and Procedure

Dear Students, and Parents or Guardians;

 The goal of physical education  at the Middle School is fitness oriented, and stresses the need for students to achieve and maintain a healthy lifestyle.  Activities that are taught may be tools to achieve lifetime fitness.  Our objective in physical education is to teach healthy habits which will last a lifetime.  Physical education and sports are clearly different.  The end goal for students in physical education class is not necessarily to become an athlete, but to have the satisfaction of physical activity that may assist movement toward optimal fitness.  It is our responsibility to teach the students of Great Meadows Regional School District what it means to be physically educated; the movement capabilities of the body: how to throw , run, catch, and jump; how the body relates to itself, and the benefits of physical activity.  Physical education is not just learning how to play a particular game or activity, but also why play or participate in activity.
 Our philosophy is...
 ... “In line with the Great Meadows Regional School District the Physical Education Department believes that through active participation in physical education the child will gain an understanding of how to make educated and responsible decisions that will lead to healthy and productive lifestyles.
 The aim of physical education is to develop the whole child through physical activity and movement.  The whole child includes all aspects of the mental, social and physical being.
 Through a well planned course of study in physical education, the child will successfully master the fundamental knowledge and skills critical to achieving lifetime fitness.”

Student Responsibility

   start of the school day.  A copy of the medical excuse should be given to
   the PE Teacher, by the student, at the start of the physical education
   class.  The students may only be excused from physical activity. All other  portions of the class and/or an alternative assignment will be required.

*  A parent note may be accepted as a physical education activity excuse,
   for a maximum of two classes.  Excuses for longer periods of time must
   be medical and must state a diagnosis and a date for return to physical
   activity.  Medical excuses will also preclude the student from recess.

Appointments:

*  A student who has an appointment with school personnel must dress
   for class and be present for attendance before being excused by their
   PE teacher.  Every effort will be made to avoid appointments during
   Physical Education or Health class.

  reasons.  Hiking boots are not acceptable.

Great Meadows Regional Middle School
Health Education
Policy and Procedure

Dear Students, and Parents or Guardians;

We are all aware that health is essential to the quality of life.  The state of New Jersey mandates that all public school students be given a comprehensive health education program.  Health education at Great Meadows Middle School is a planned sequential curriculum that addresses the physical, mental, emotional and social dimensions of health.  The curriculum is designed to motivate and assist students in maintaining and improving their health, preventing disease, and reducing health risk behaviors. Students will develop and demonstrate increasingly sophisticated health-related knowledge, attitudes, skills and practices.

To complete this health course of study a student is expected to participate in all areas of the curriculum.  Health and Physical Education are cycled within the same period during each marking period. Health is considered an academic subject, therefore, is considered for honor roll.  Coursework is not to be taken lightly.

Students will be taught using a variety of methods to strive to meet the needs of all students.  Therefore, the students will be graded on major and minor assignments such as written assignments, worksheets and tests, rubrics and performance assessments. Student responsibilities are as follows:

 * All work is to be handed in on the specified due date.  Failure to do so will result in a  “0” to be averaged in toward the students final grade.

 * Students are to arrive to class on time, prepared, and ready for class.

 * A health folder and/or note book is required and may be graded.

 * If a student is absent from class they are responsible to make up all work.

 * If absent from school, the student will have one day to make up assignments missed.

 * If absent from class only, the student must hand in work the following day. This does not exempt the student from handing in assignments due that day.

 * If absent on the day of a major test, the student is responsible to make an appointment with their health teacher to make up the test.  The student must make up the test within three days of their absenteeism.

 * It is the student’s responsibility to find out what they missed.

 * The students are responsible for their own learning.  Effort is required!

 Also available is an outline of each unit of study for your child’s grade level. This provides the information your child will be introduced to.  If a parent or guardian feels that the content of the Family Life or HIV/AIDS  units of study are in conflict with sincerely held moral or religious beliefs then, pursuant to N.J.A.C. 6:29-4.2, the pupil may be exempted from that part of the instructional program.  If your child does not participate in these units of study he/she will be given alternative assignments. The responsibility for educating those exempted units of study lies with the parent/guardian.
