MENINGOCOCCEMIA

September 14, 2004

On Monday, September 13, 2004, a 13-year old male presented at Jersey Shore medical Center’s Emergency room and died later that evening. It has been confirmed that the child died from meningococcemia, due to the bacteria Neisseria meningitidis. The child was in the 8th grade at Wall Intermediate School in Wall Township, Monmouth County.

Individuals in both Monmouth and Ocean Counties who had possible prolonged close contact with this child were identified, including those who attended church, school, and sport activities.  The Monmouth and Ocean County Health Departments have already contacted family members of the child and other close contacts to recommend antibiotics as needed.

Meningococcal disease is an infection caused by bacteria and is spread by prolonged, close contact with someone who has the illness. The bacteria are spread by coughing, sneezing, kissing, or sharing cups, bottles, or eating utensils with the ill person. Even after exposure to the bacteria, it is very unusual to get infected. Typically, after infection it takes 2-10 days before symptoms appear.

If you need more information, please contact your family doctor or the Warren County Health Department at 908-689-6693.  For general information on meningococcal disease, visit the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services website at www.state.nj.us/health.
